This weekend we celebrated Otie’s first birthday! I’ve always wanted to throw a “Goodnight Moon” themed party and this felt like the perfect occasion. We’ve spent the last few months curled up in his room reading books and his enthusiasm for reading has grown so much! He points to all of the little things and giggles while we read them. Goodnight Moon is one of my personal favorites in our book rotation and one that Otie enjoys too!
This theme was one of the easiest ones I have put together. We ordered a few decorations and then pulled the rest from around our house! The tablecloth is two pieces of fabric that I ordered to make curtains for my office doors at the Toy Store, I hadn’t gotten around to sewing them yet and I’m so glad because the fabric worked perfectly! We used our Double Star Play Silk from Sarah’s Silks for a table runner.
I made and decorated Otie’s smash cake and a crescent moon shaped cake - I use box cake mixes and they always turn out super great! I added a “1” candle from The Wild One’s and a little Ostheimer mouse from Bella Luna Toys to his smash cake. For the crescent moon cake I just added a few sprinkles and an Ostheimer cow from Bella Luna Toys.
The big kids helped me make and decorate the sugar cookies. We went with crescent moons, stars, and yellow cows.
My sister in law helped hang up these streamers to match the curtains in the book
(I just had knee surgery!). We hung two strands together from the light in the center to each corner of the room and then let them drape down a little (but not too long that a curious little baby would be able to reach them!)
We hung a few extra streamers from Otie’s high chair to add a little color for when he tried his cake (spoiler - he wasn’t super into it!) and we hung up this big red balloon to match the one in the book!
I found this super cute star chandelier and hung it from our light. I figure we can also use it for the Fourth of July/New Years!
I cut socks and mittens out of cardstock and hung them on this old drying rack that we have. They would also be super cute clipped on to a string of twine in place of a drying rack!
I found two of the goodnight moon images on google and was able to screenshot and print them. I wasn’t able to find an image in color for the Cow Jumping over the Moon, so I traced over a screenshot of it on my ipad using Procreate.
My mother in law made us a big batch of vanilla pudding for the “bowl full of mush” and we found a comb and a brush from around the house to place near it.
I ordered a few party supplies specific for this party, but I also pulled out a few from past parties from our party box! The little cow, bear plates, green napkins, and star plates were all from previous birthdays and baby showers.
I love how it all came together and there wasn’t a whole lot to set up on the day of which made decorating really simple. We had so much fun celebrating our Otie!
